What are the benefits of CIEP membership? (Chartered Insitute of Editing and Proofreading)

😁 I’ve just renewed my membership of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP) for another year. ❓ What do I get out of my membership? – Access to forums to tap into the hive mind of my editorial colleagues – Opportunities for work from the IM Available list – Discounted training opportunities (*theContinue reading “What are the benefits of CIEP membership? Do you use Bookbub? Do you like it?

Happy World Book Day! πŸ’‘I’ve made an interesting discovery this week and that’s the website Bookbub. From what I can gather, it’s a site that lists 99p and free ebook promotions on Kindle etc. Books that are reduced for a limited time only. πŸ“š There are some big names on there. I saw Brick LaneContinue reading “Do you use Bookbub? Do you like it?”

Where can I get free books for homework and homeschooling?

Tip for UK parents. Borrowbox! The young un is doing a project on London this week. So I’ve been on my library’s Borrowbox app and have downloaded the Lonely Planet guide. Sumptuous pictures. Easy to navigate. Free. Not all homeschool projects need to involve Google. Books have been carefully put together so research can beContinue reading “Where can I get free books for homework and homeschooling?”

Is it aitch or haitch? Should have or should of?

Aitch or haitch. (H) ❓ Is it C-R-O-N-S-aitch-A-W or C-R-O-N-S-haitch-A-W? I’ve heard myself saying β€˜haitch’ this year. Ssh. That’s just between us.🀫 βœ”Aitch ➑ haitch ❌used to be a line I’d never cross. Years of wincing when I heard it – it used to be my pet peeve – ensured that those particular sounds wouldContinue reading “Is it aitch or haitch? Should have or should of?”

Does the hat fit? My journey to setting up my own editing business.

Get ahead. Get a hat (that fits.) 🎩 I used to have one big hat. I put it on in 2005. It was comfortable and suited me. I’d wear it from 7am until bedtime. It sometimes looked a bit dishevelled, but time unworn in the holidays would spruce it up. About five years ago, theContinue reading “Does the hat fit? What is Cumberland and Westmorland dialect?

Driving yam for Christmas? I’m not. Not this year.πŸš— Yam is Cumberland and Westmorland dialect for home. As garn yam means I’m going home. I love my home dialect. It’s so colourful. I sometimes find standard English variants don’t cut the mustard and don’t quite mean what I want to say. Take waffy. You couldContinue reading “What is Cumberland and Westmorland dialect?”

Take your wellbeing seriously. How being self-employed has brought about a shift in my mindset.

Sort yourself before you help others. That’s the advice you hear from cabin crew. In an emergency, sort your own oxygen mask before you sort your child’s. It’s someone else’s analogy. But it made a big impact when I heard it. It makes sense but feels counterintuitive. Touch wood, I’ve never had to test whatContinue reading “Take your wellbeing seriously. Zoom has broadened my horizons and opportunities.

I’ve joined in more events this year than ever. Video conferencing has been the saviour of 2020. I’d done the odd Zoom before but I’ve at least quadrupled my video conferencing experience this year. And I think it’s marvellous. I mean, yeah, Zoom fatigue is a thing, but it’s just such an inclusive technology. IContinue reading “Zoom has broadened my horizons and opportunities.”

What’s your most embarrassing job interview moment?

Most embarrassing job interview moment? 🎺 It’s a toss up between the short musical interlude I performed using my invisible trumpet… “I don’t want to blow my own trumpet, but, do de do de do.” I actually got that job so maybe they liked it.πŸ˜‚ ✍️ … And the time I wrote all over aContinue reading “What’s your most embarrassing job interview moment?”

How can an accountability group help me achieve my goals?

I’m going to blow my own trumpet and reflect that, career-wise, 2020 has gone well. 🎺 This is in no small part due to the motivating coaching call I had with Lisa Carlin back in May. As soon as I came off the Zoom, I sent out feelers to a few others in the sameContinue reading “How can an accountability group help me achieve my goals?”
