Saturday adventures: a dragon quest.

πŸ‰ I went on a dragon quest this afternoon. πŸ₯š I was part of an elite crew of sleuths tracking down the villain who attempted to steal the golden dragon egg. πŸ”Ž We searched high and low. Scoured the landscape. Used our skills of logic and deduction. And we did it. πŸ† The villain hasContinue reading “Saturday adventures: a dragon quest.”

A little nostalgia and introspection. Where the editing idea began.

You wouldn’t think that the location in the first picture is anywhere near the others, would you? That’s cities for you! Turn a corner and you’re in another world. I took these photos this morning on a trip down memory lane. We’ve returned to Leeds for a couple of days to catch up with folk,Continue reading “A little nostalgia and introspection. Is it ‘should of’ or ‘should have’? Eggsellent advice contained herein.

❓ Why am I sharing this WhatsApp screenshot with you? 1️⃣ To answer the question: what do proofreaders have for lunch? 2️⃣ To demonstrate that I’m a proofreader with a winning sense of humour? 3️⃣ To give my international followers a taste of a British classic, as good in flavour as it is in onomatopoeia?Continue reading “Is it ‘should of’ or ‘should have’? Today’s top proofreading spots.

πŸ”Ž Top #proofreading spots from an edit I’m working on. 1️⃣ I looked causally at… ❌ ➑ I looked casually at … βœ” 2️⃣ My friend Jaime ❌ My friend Jamie βœ” (The name had been Jamie throughout so this was just a typo/letter switch) 3️⃣ I used to be less social ❌ I usedContinue reading “Today’s top proofreading spots.”

Who[m] do you trust with advice for doing it yourself – decorating or self-editing?

Too many cooks spoil the broth? Too many decorating experts spoil the walls? Too many editors spoil the manuscript?! Yesterday I received decorating advice that sent my head into a spin. Shop worker: You want primer? Why? Tell me what you’re working on. Me: I’ve done a mist coat on newly dried plaster and I’mContinue reading “Who[m] do you trust with advice for doing it yourself – decorating or self-editing?”

What tools do proofreaders and editors use for accuracy and efficiency?

❓ What are the power tools of your industry? Please expect lots of DIY analogies this week as I decorate my son’s room. We’ve gone right back to the bare bones and have had the room re-plastered. As the plaster dries, I’ve been getting on with sanding woodwork for some other jobs that need doing aroundContinue reading “What tools do proofreaders and editors use for accuracy and efficiency?”

Looking for a proofreader or editor with experience?

Remember when I crossed the one million words milestone? I’m almost at one and a half million. Please picture me saying this in a Dr Evil style. 😁 What I’m not-very-subtly suggesting by posting this in front of you is that I’m experienced. I’ve edited and proofread lots of words. I could edit/proofread your words,Continue reading “Looking for a proofreader or editor with experience?”

Is it dispatch box or despatch box? Should Parliament be capitalised? Back-bencher or backbencher? Proofreading dystopian political fiction.

πŸ”Ž Today’s proofread has a political theme. Dystopian fiction, written in 2017, but weirdly prescient. It’s not a futuristic setting, rather a twisted version of our own, and so the words need to be styled in a recognised way. Part of this involves carefully checking spelling, hyphenation and capitalisation. Dispatch box ❌ has become despatchContinue reading “Is it dispatch box or despatch box? I’m rolling with it. New editing availability. (And, while we’re on it, is it role or roll? Rollout or roll out?)

πŸŽͺ Role up. ❌ Roll up. βœ” I’m on a role. ❌ Over the last few years, I’ve gone from one day a week of editing, to two, and, from September, I’ll be up to three. πŸ‘ Go me! And a bonus #EagleEyedCherry #writingtip is to remind you of the different spellings and uses ofContinue reading “I’m rolling with it. New editing availability. Looking for an editor who specialises in indie fiction?

I’m the editor for an indie author who has 41 books/series listed on Amazon. I’m the editor for an indie author whose day job is writing – it’s not a side hustle. I’m the editor for my husband. I used to feel embarrassed saying that. I felt it took away some of the kudos ofContinue reading “Looking for an editor who specialises in indie fiction?”
