
Fair enough, I say. That’s a decent way in. You’ve obviously got a good imagination.
What I also, think, hope and ultimately check in the manuscript is whether that story has translated into effective narrative craft.
Films are effective because you’ve got the action, the actors, the facial expressions, the visuals, the sounds, the props, the camera angles.
And novels are effective because you’ve got… Well, you’ve got to have more than the action.
I know you know this. I know that you know you can describe facial expressions, you can use sensory description to evoke sounds, you can give details about the appearance of environments.
But how are you handling the writing-world equivalent of camera angles? Shots? Cuts? The pace of scenes?
That’s where structural elements come in, and using them properly makes all the difference between ‘things happening’ and what we want to achieve — which is top-notch storytelling. Sentence length and word order, paragraphing, point of view, transitions. You’ve got all sorts of tools at your disposal. Loads. Which ones do you want to nail?
