Did you even know your job existed when you were at school? 🤔
When I was at school, there were so many jobs that I didn’t even know existed.
And it’s not because of technology.
Some of these jobs have been around a long time.
There are areas of study that I didn’t even know existed.
Like anthropology. That sounds utterly fascinating. I reckon I’d have been all over that. Had I known it existed.
When I was thinking about careers, I pretty much thought about an extension of the subjects I studied at school. Either that, or jobs that I knew about because family and friends’ parents did them.
Don’t get me wrong, I have no regrets in studying English and becoming an English teacher.
But I came to proofreading far later in my career.
Did I know about the existence of proofreaders when I was thinking about my career in the 90s? Maybe. Possibly. I knew of it as a skill. But other jobs in the publishing world were a bit of a mystery.
Yeah, I could have looked into it. But that’s the thing about teenagers: you don’t know what you don’t know.
What are your thoughts on this? Were you lucky enough to have had a wide pool of career inspiration to draw on?
Let me know in the comments.
