Fay Weldon has never written a character profile.

I have never done such a thing. […] The complexity of it would defeat me.

Instead, she lets her characters grow as the story unfolds.

She breaks down their makeup like this:

🟠 ‘One quarter stereotype…
🟠 ‘One quarter myself…
🟠 ‘The third quarter a mélange of all the people I’ve ever known…
🟠 ‘And the final quarter? Sheer invention.’

But she also reminds us:

‘There is no one way of doing anything.
