Could you make a ‘permeance’ slip? It depends on your process.

permeance: the property of allowing the passage of lines of magnetic flux.
permanence: the state or quality of lasting or remaining unchanged indefinitely.

Step 1: The creative writer is hammering the keyboard at speed. There’s a slip of the fingers and ‘oops’: they type ‘permeance’ instead of ‘permanence’.
Step 2: The writer finishes the manuscript and runs a spell-check. But the spell-check does not see a misspelling.
Step 3: The writer self-edits and reads what they ‘think’ is there rather than what’s actually there. Their eyes gloss over the mistake.
Step 4: They run a spell-check again, but it still doesn’t pick up the problem word.
Step 5: Depends what the writer does for their next stage of quality assurance…

* If they send it to pals to cast their eyes over, they might see it (or they might not).
* If they send it to an editor/proofreader, odds are that it’ll be picked up.

đź‘‚ I’m an editor and I’d notice this mistake. Want to know how I make sure I catch words like this? I do an audio pass of the manuscript. It’s an extra layer of protection. I can HEAR the difference between ‘permanence’ and ‘permeance’ immediately.

🧰 It’s just one of the many strategies I have in my toolbox. When all the tools are combined with my natural editorial abilities (lol, I know how smug that sounds!), the level of accuracy skyrockets.
