How good are you at estimating your word counts?

I’ve just opened the YA fantasy manuscript that I’ll be starting to work on next week – just to check it is all present and correct, etc.

Two things of note:

1️⃣ The author delivered the manuscript a week ahead of schedule. That’s a first! The vast majority deliver on time, but never early.

2️⃣ The author is within ~800 words of their estimated word count. That’s quite a lot closer than normal. It’s usually within 5000 or so, but can be out by bigger margins. No one, touch wood, has ever delivered me a manuscript that bears no resemblance to the one they promised, but yeah, to be within 800 words is quite impressive.

❓ Authors: how good are you at estimating your final word count?

❓ Editors: do the manuscripts that come your way ever arrive early?
