Yorkshire Day: my favourite Yorkshire dialect words.

šŸ—Æļø You know I’m a fan of regional dialect.

Today is #YorkshireDay and, while that’s not my heritage, the 12 years I spent living there were happy ones.

To celebrate the linguistic variety of this beloved place, here are a few of my favourite Yorkshire-isms. (Now, it’s a BIG county so not all folk use these.)

1ļøāƒ£ Worritwowere (what it was was…) — used to start an anecdote. So, worriwowere… šŸ—£ļø

2ļøāƒ£ Working 9 while 5 — what a way to make a living! šŸ’¼

3ļøāƒ£ Ecky and Clecky — used respectively for Heckmondwike and Cleckheaton šŸŒ

4ļøāƒ£ Fuddle — where everyone brings food to share for a buffet, see also Jacob’s join šŸ§€

5ļøāƒ£ Wi bits? — with scraps, the bits of batter floating around in the fryers and added to your chips free of charge if you answer “yes” to the question. šŸŸ

šŸ¤“ Hit me with some of your favourite dialect words, Yorkshire or otherwise.
