In today’s era of heightened political awareness and divisions, the question arises: should authors incorporate politics into their brand?
It’s a matter that hits close to home, given my background in political reporting and public relations for a UK shadow minister.
But let me clarify my stance: you won’t catch me endorsing any candidates or parties.

My Take: The Separation of Politics and Brand
Before I penned fantastical tales, I covered political landscapes and even served as public relations for a shadow minister.
Yet, despite my rich political background, I choose not to weave politics into my authorial brand.
My books are designed to offer escapism, a respite from the world’s complexities.
If you follow me on social media, expect questions about dragons and bookish wonders, not debates on tax policies.
The Downside of Political Branding
Taking a political stance (especially in the volatile climate of so-called ‘culture war’ issues) can be like walking on eggshells.
You risk alienating a segment of your readership, which could, in turn, affect your sales and reputation.
One wrong tweet could unleash an unforgiving backlash.
The Upside: Finding Your Tribe
On the flip side, for some authors, aligning their brand with political views might be a strategic move.
For example, if your protagonist is a soldier, sharing content that supports veterans can be in harmony with your brand. Know your readership and be intentional.
Being Intentional Is Key
If you feel compelled to voice your political opinions, it’s crucial to do so with purpose.
Careless posts can not only damage your brand but also divert your attention from what should be your primary focus: writing.
A Compromise: Separate Your Worlds
If you can’t hold back your political fervour, consider creating a separate account that aligns with your activism.
This ensures your political expressions are potent and don’t dilute your authorial brand.
And vice versa, your political activities aren’t muddied by you talking about your upcoming book launch.
Your brand is a carefully curated garden; know what seeds you’re sowing.
Are you an author who integrates politics into your brand? Has it worked for you? Share your thoughts!
