How my editing work snowballed from one word-of-mouth recommendation.

Claire Cronshaw and Gavin Kemp and six of his books: Almond and the Lanista, Juno and the Lady, Valen and the Beasts, Dr Viktor and the Travelling Circus, Petra and the Sewer Rats, Miles and the Soldier

One of the proudest moments in my editing career happened in November 2021 when G. J. Kemp reached out to me for a copyedit. This wasn’t just another client enquiry—this one was special. It marked the first time an author had come to me purely because of a word-of-mouth recommendation. It was a significant milestone.

Up until that point, I’d worked my backside off to network and build community and trust, and I was marketing hard to grow my business. I could directly trace every author client back to an interaction I’d had with them online.

But in November 2021, something changed. Other people had started to become my cheerleaders, spreading the word about my editing services. G. J. Kemp heard about me from author Francesca Catlow, and he reached out for a sample edit. That was the beginning of our collaboration.

350,000+ edited words later, we are still working together.

I’m proud to work with Gavin and I’m grateful to Francesca for setting this in motion. The snowball started here. 😁

This experience reminded me of the power of word-of-mouth within the indie author community. It reinforced the idea that trust and relationships are at the heart of what we do. I didn’t need flashy sales pitches or aggressive marketing—just genuine connections.

To all the indie authors out there, if you like my vibe, why don’t you get to know me better? I’m on various socials. Come and hang out.

And if you decide you like the cut of my jib and you fancy having your work edited by me (or maybe you’re after some coaching) drop me a message.
