Aspiring No More: How to Embrace Your Author Journey with Confidence

The journey to becoming an author is often littered with self-doubt and imposter syndrome.

As a result, many people label themselves as “aspiring authors,” as if this term serves as a security blanket—shielding them from criticism or failure.

But here’s the truth—if you write, you’re a writer.

If you’ve crafted stories, characters, or worlds, you’re an author.

So, why hold onto the term ‘aspiring’?

The Power of Self-Identification

When you identify yourself as an ‘aspiring author’, you unintentionally put yourself in a passive position.

It’s as if you’re waiting for permission from some higher authority—be it agents, publishers, or critics—to validate your craft.

But guess what?

Writing is a personal journey, one where you are the one in control.

Self-identifying as an author, plain and simple, puts you in an empowered position.

Imposter Syndrome & Validation

Many fear the judgment that comes with claiming the title of ‘author.’

They worry that unless they’ve published a book or won an award, they’re not worthy of this title.

But remember, every accomplished author was once where you are—unpublished, unrecognised, but still writing.

The only difference is, they didn’t let these external factors define them.

You shouldn’t either.

The term ‘aspiring’ doesn’t just undermine your confidence—it can also influence how others perceive you.

If you present yourself as someone who is still aspiring to do something, people may not take your work as seriously.

The term has the tendency to diminish the hard work, the countless hours spent brainstorming, writing, and editing, making it seem like a hobby rather than a serious pursuit.

Authors Write

An essential aspect of being an author is writing.

That’s it.

Not publishing deals, not literary agents, and certainly not awards.

If you are committed to the craft, consistently writing and improving, you are an author.

Yes, publishing is an important milestone, but it’s just that—a milestone in a much larger journey.

Don’t sell yourself short by clinging to a term that undermines your work and passion.

Labels should serve us, not limit us.

If you write, if you craft stories, if you breathe life into characters, then drop that qualifier.

You are not an ‘aspiring author.’

You are an author.

Own it.
